It’s generally reckoned that about a third of all food in the UK ends up in the bin, either as scraps from our plates or because it has gone stale or past its sell by date and is a particular problem over the festive season. As well as a chance to cut down your food shopping bill, you are missing out on the opportunity to create the most amazing compost. There is an option for everyone – yes everyone! From a traditional compost heap at the bottom of the garden to a wormery or bokashi bucket, the latter two being perfect for anyone with the smallest of spaces like a balcony or yard. If you have kids they will love looking after the worms and are much cheaper to keep than a pony! If you’re a bit squeamish, a bokashi bucket may be the answer you’ve been looking for – no worms involved just effective micro-organisms breaking down your food scraps, including meat and fish (great for those bits of leftover Turkey that no-one can face eating!). All completely natural and easy to use.

I bought 2 bokashi bins off you in the summer but it was disgusting. I did everything but never got any liquid out of them. And inside the bin it was slimy and festering. Could not even bring myself to wash them out after the 3rd go so just binned them - expensive waste of money.
I am sorry to hear that you have had a bad experience using Bokashi. It’s a system that was developed over 25 years ago in Japan and has been used successfully all over the world. When the recommended amount of bran is added and the bin sealed and left for two weeks only, the contents are ready to either dig directly into the ground or added to a traditional compost heap. The contents obviously do have an odour, but it will be more of a “pickled” smell. If it smells foul then something has indeed gone wrong. We are always happy to help with individual queries and positively encourage customers to contact us because we want everyone to succeed in making great compost.
We bought 2 Bokashi bins in September (as complete novices) and have been Bokashying (if that's the right term) ever since. It's worked fine for us, no slime, no smell (other than the vinegary one)and it's had an amazing accelerating effect on our compost.
We find a new bucket doesn't produce fluid for the first week of filling.
Hi Alison
I'm glad to hear that your Bokashying (it does have a certain ring to it!) is going well. I think most people find it beneficial and it certainly speeds up composting considerably.
